How to build a reading life that lasts

A few gentle systems for making more room for the books you keep meaning to read.

Reading more is rarely a problem of wanting it badly enough. Usually, it is a problem of friction: the book is in another room, the bookmark has disappeared, the day has become a series of small urgent things.

The answer does not need to be a grand new routine. Start with one visible book. Put it somewhere your hand already goes. Let ten minutes count. A reading life is built from returns, not streaks.

Make the next page easy

Keep a book by the bed, in your bag, or beside the kettle. When the book is close, the decision is already made. Turn off notifications for a small window and read until the tea is ready.

Read what pulls you forward

You do not owe a book your completion. A good reading life has room for abandoned starts, strange detours, and rereading the same favourite chapter for a year.

The point is not to finish more books. It is to let more good sentences find you.
