The art of the margin

Why the edges of a page are sometimes where a book becomes yours.

There is a particular intimacy in writing in a book. The note is small, but it changes the page forever. A margin becomes a record of the moment you met an idea.

We love underlines, but we love questions even more. A question leaves the door open. It says: I am still here, still thinking, still in conversation with this page.

If you are nervous about marking a new book, begin with the date. Write when you started it and where you were. Years from now, that tiny note will be a map back to an earlier version of you.
